Happy Mardi Gras!!!

Well tonight the 2011 Gay and Lesbian Sydney Mardi Gras festival ends with the usual BANG, with the parade beginning at 7:30pm and the party afterwards. I love this time of year, the streets are so vibrant and festive and buzzing with gay tourists from all over the world. The festival lasts for 2 weeks and kickstarted this year with Queer Thinking, a day celebrating Gay Arts and Literature which I was very proud to be a part of for the second year running as judge of the Mardi Gras Short Story competition. For everyone in Sydney and Australia, enjoy the parade! For everyone else, we wish you were here! Happy Mardi Gras, everyone!

Who is Luca da Roma?

Twenty-six years ago, a baby boy was left in a basket on the doorstep of the convent of Santa Maria del Mare in Tuscany. There was a note pinned to the baby’s blanket explaining that he had no name and was a bastard child, born in the ghettoes of Rome. Around his neck was a small crucifix on a silver chain. No markings. No engraving. No clue as to who this child could be.

When the kindly Sister Eva discovered the baby on the doorstep, the morning sun was shining on the child's face. She took him in, and the three nuns living at the convent named him Luca da Roma—the Light of Rome.
